We Are In This Together...

As many a resident (and real estate agent) will attest, there is a cache to living "in the Gardens". It isn't often talked about, but everyone knows it is real. All you need to do is research prices of homes outside our borders and you will note a significant "appreciation in value" just by crossing the street and having one of our addresses. Have you ever stopped to consider why that is?

After Receiving Much-Deserved TLC and Rest, Gardens Parks Due to Reopen Soon!

Urban parks are more than just green spaces, they are essential components of the city experience. The park spaces in the Gardens are a shining example of this. Despite the challenges brought on by the pandemic, our parks were bustling with activity. From tai chi to picnics, families and friends gathered to enjoy the outdoors and each other's company. The value of our beautiful parks was never fully appreciated as much as during those dark days, but it came at a substantial cost.

Don’t miss the 104th Annual Flag Day Celebration!

Saturday June 15th at 11:00 on the Flagpole Green

This year’s event will kick off with a color guard procession by our local Boy Scout Troop 349 and a Flag Raising Ceremony with the assistance of local community organizations and local elected officials.

We’ll also enjoy a musical performance of traditional patriotic songs, hear the Garden Players singing songs from their new show, Creature Mountain & the Slime Corporation, and cheer on the winners of an essay contest from local schools on What the American Flag Means to Me.

Bring your family, friends, dogs and most of all your community spirit and join us for this moving community event.

Sprinkler System Suggestions

To help keep our neighborhood green during the hottest months of summer, many homes utilize sprinkler systems to water both their yards and the adjacent curb plots. While the FHGC welcomes - and appreciates - curb plot watering, caution should be taken as to the placement of sprinkler heads and the timing of watering.

Since sprinkler heads can only be installed on your property, property surveys should be consulted prior to installation to assure proper placement. Additionally, it is best to install them far from the sidewalk edge to protect them from winter snow removal equipment.

Finally, please be respectful with the timing of your watering. Most experts suggest day break as the perfect time — around 4 to 5 am — which avoids excess moisture overnight and prevents mold growth. Watering during daylight hours should be avoided since it often necessitates a precarious situation for pedestrians, not to mention is often counterproductive since much of the water simply evaporates.

Summer in the Gardens...

What a fantastic spring we have had in the Gardens! As many a long-time Gardens resident would attest, this spring has been one of the most spectacular. The magnolias and cherry blossom were simply bursting with color, and the array of snowdrops, tulips and daffodils was a sight to behold.

Curb Plot Plantings A No-No

While we all love to add outside touches around our homes each spring - and can easily get carried away at the home improvement and gardening shops - please limit the plantings to your own yards. The curb plots should be left as grass and not supplemented with any bushes, shrubs or plantings of any type. This green space, together with our parks, belongs to the Gardens. All plantings should be kept two feet from the sidewalks, inside your property line, to limit potential trip hazards but also to not impede sidewalk and street access.

This month's featured FHGC Committee:

Upkeep

The Upkeep Committee, in collaboration with our Gardens crew, embodies a devoted team committed to the preservation and care of our historical community's infrastructure.

From the continuous maintenance of roadways, sidewalks, sewers, and green spaces to the efficient management of lighting, signage, and snow removal, our committee volunteers and crew are the unsung heroes preserving the charm and functionality of our century-old neighborhood. Their oversight extends to the procurement and upkeep of all essential equipment required for these tasks.

The Committee members not only gain valuable insights but also engage with a diverse range of vendors, from metal casting experts for lamp posts to asphalt paving and sewer scoping professionals, as they navigate the intricate operations of our "small town." Unsurprisingly, this Committee shoulders the responsibility of overseeing the lion's share of the Corporation's annual budget, a testament to their indispensable role in our community.

New Trees for the Gardens!

During the week beginning May 6th, eight new trees were planted throughout the Gardens. This is just the beginning of a program of "legacy tree planting" which will follow for years to come, and should provide a degree of comfort to those who have watched our trees being pruned or removed over the past few years and wondered when the few spaces in our tree canopy would be addressed.

Neighborhood Tree Challenge Answer: Eastern Redbud aka American Redbud, Judas Tree, and Flowering Judas. (Cercis canadensis). These flowering trees have small, showy blooms that form clusters that pop up all over the tree, even up and down the trunk! Look closely! These Middlemay Place trees are one of the first plants to herald the arrival of spring each year.

FHGC Board Highlights:

Storm Drain Replacements Underway!

The Gardens is currently continuing with the replacement of twenty-one storm drains by an external contractor this spring. This meticulous process involves excavating the street, replacing deteriorated (and often collapsed) cavity drains, establishing new connections to existing storm lines, installing modern circular street-level drains, and refurbishing curbs with pebble-finished concrete. This proactive initiative not only enhances our infrastructure but also sets the stage for upcoming paving projects.
