"We shall not be burdened by purpose." That was the spirit and sentiment of a small band of men who created the Men’s Club of Forest Hills back in 1913. In fact, it was specifically stated in their original charter. They sought an atmosphere where men could get together and blow of steam while at the same time foster friendships with their fellow FH neighbors.

This 100-year organization has lots of memories - venture to the back of the Community House and you’ll find vintage photographs of men in suits and top hats. Today, while top hats are not a requirement, the Club has grown into a diverse group of men of all ages from all walks of professional life and cultural backgrounds - anything from contractors, television producers, lawyers, doctors, business owners and much more, with over 100 current members, many Gardens residents. In fact, the club’s current President, Andrew Radford, holds a key position at the United Nations and is active in encouraging more neighborhood men to join the club. "It’s a great way to network and have fun at the same time," Radford says (If interested in joining, email andrew.radford@gmail.com).

While the club seeks to keep the spirit of fun alive and well, the Men’s Club members are active in lending a hand to various Gardens activities, like the Celebration Committee's annual Children’ Day and assembly of the seasonal boughs that decorate the lamp posts in the Gardens each December. Michael Acardi is the Commander of the Forest Hills American Legion Post and an active Men’s Club member. Michael, a Naval Officer and married dad of two, leads the Men’s Club members in the annual Memorial Day Parade down Metropolitan Avenue. Also, the club holds an annual 30-mile bike ride in memory of one of its past presidents, Peter Vairo. Proceeds go to his alma mater, Our Lady Queen of Martyrs.

Besides helping with community activities, the Men’s Club holds a variety of men-only functions. Their annual dinner at the WSTC is a fun filled event that includes lawn tennis, followed by dinner and cigars (optional) in the Rose Garden. Others are a fall Oktoberfest and a NCAA night. Chip Smith, a former Men’s Club President and former Fordham University football captain, organizes a football outing to the Bronx campus annually.

On some occasions, wives and significant others are invited to also take part in their activities, such as their December holiday gala. This is the club’s black-tie-optional marquee event held at The Community House for a night of dinner and dancing. The Men's Club members are also invited to take part in the Women's Club's annual Guest Night spring performance and dinner.
